Sanseian in Kyoto consists of three differently styled tearooms. This old Japanese style building also includes a waiting room, a handwriting room and a reception room with a beautiful view of Kyoto. A grandmaster said that he had tried to create a space where people could enjoy various items of Sencha. He felt that he could have expressed secrets of Sencha tea ceremony. The Sanseian is a masterpiece of the literati style in the Heisei period
Sanseian of Ogawa Tea School is situated in the northern part of Kyoto City and attracts considerable attention because of its Sencha style in the modern times. The grandmaster designed the Sanseian and its construction was completed in 1993. The Sanseian has a total area of about 1000 sq. meters. The main Sanseian building has an area of 560 sq. meters. Within it can be found two Japanese styled tearooms and one Chinese styled tearoom. Sanroan, a tiny Sencha teahouse, stands on the north end of its garden. The grandmaster said that it was too complicated to design Sanseian in Sencha and literati style. For this reason the building'fs design and its decorations and furnishings are devoid of excessive luxury and splendor. He showed something honest, modest and frugal, yet at the same displaying much elegance. He named it Sanseian after Sansei which literally means three sacred elements of nature; fire, water and wind. These indispensable elements should harmonize well with each other to make a delicious tea. Our school has been recognized the importance of three elements through most time.
